Seasense was launched in 2001 to build an accurate picture of the current status of endangered sea turtles and dugongs, reverse declining populations and promote protection of coastal and marine habitats vital to their survival. The programme has adopted a community-based approach and over the past four years has been developing village-level monitoring, conservation and education methods along the 900km coast of Tanzania. This grass roots strategy means that community members actively participate in the protection and conservation of their own natural resources.
